Amid Shutdown, IRS Establishes Opening of Tax Season
The Internal Revenue Service has set the opening of the tax filing season despite an ongoing government shutdown. The IRS confirmed that it will begin processing individual income tax returns on January 28, 2019, and provide refunds to taxpayers as scheduled. The filing deadline to submit 2018 individual income tax returns is Monday, April 15, 2019.
The IRS previously announced that they will begin accepting business returns on January 8, 2019. Partnership and S-Corporation income tax returns are due to be filed by March 15, 2019. C-Corporation income tax returns are due to be filed by April 15, 2019.
Because of the government shutdown there have been many questions surrounding the IRS' ability to process returns and issue refunds. While specific details have not been released the IRS has stated they have the legal authority to issue refunds during a shutdown.
In what is certain to be a controversal decision, the IRS also stated their intention to recall a significant portion of their furloughed employees.
